A Kenmore washer that won't drain or spin usually has a blocked drain path, an unbalanced or overloaded drum, or too many suds. Clear those first. If water still sits in the tub, the drain pump, the lid switch or lock, the door lock or the drive system is the likely cause, and your model number decides which parts and fixes apply.

Start with your model number
Kenmore appliances were sold through Sears, and the washers under the Kenmore name have come from more than one manufacturer. Two Kenmore washers that look alike can use different pumps, locks and error codes. That is why the steps below are general washer guidance, not Kenmore-specific procedures.
Kenmore's manual search asks for your model number, which it says is at least 11 characters long, and returns the use and care guide for that washer. Find the model label on your machine, enter the number, and use that manual for the error code list and the location of any pump filter. Don't trust a code chart written for a different washer.
Rule out the simple causes
Most drain and spin stops are triggered by the load or the settings. Whirlpool's general washer guidance lists the usual suspects, and they apply to almost any washer:
- Gentle cycles: Delicate and Hand Wash cycles spin slowly by design and can leave clothes wet. Try a Drain and Spin or Rinse and Spin cycle.
- Unbalanced or overloaded drum: one heavy item or a packed tub can stop the spin. Kenmore's own laundry tips warn against cramming in extra-large loads. Take some items out and spread the rest evenly.
- Too much detergent: excess suds can interfere with pumping and spinning. Use HE detergent in an HE washer and dose by the detergent maker's directions, as Kenmore also advises.
- Lid or door not latched: washers won't spin with the lid or door open. Check that nothing is caught in it.
- Power blip: if power was interrupted, restart with a drain or spin cycle.
Also check that the washer is level. Kenmore's maintenance tips suggest using a level and adjusting the feet, since an uneven washer can keep pausing to rebalance.
Make it safe before you go further
Before you reach into the pump filter, pull the washer out or open any panel, unplug the washer and turn off both the hot and cold supply valves. GE Appliances' washer manual notes that pressing the power button does not disconnect a washer from its electrical supply, which is true of washers in general. Water left in the tub may be hot, so let it cool, and keep towels and a shallow pan ready.
Front-load Kenmore washers
Kenmore sells front-loaders with its Smart Motion wash system. Many front-loaders, whatever the brand, have a drain pump filter behind a small cover at the bottom front. Your manual will say whether yours does. As a general example, Whirlpool's front-load steps are:
- Set a broad, flat pan under the filter area.
- Pull out the small drain hose, remove its cap and let the water run out. Re-cap it to empty the pan.
- Turn the filter counterclockwise to remove it, clear out lint and debris, and rinse it.
- Screw it back in clockwise until snug and close the cover.
If the door won't lock, the washer won't spin. Look for clothing caught in the door and make sure it closes fully.
Top-load Kenmore washers
Kenmore top-loaders come with either an agitator or an agitator-free impeller wash plate, and that design changes what a technician works on. Many top-loaders have no filter you can reach, and the drain hose connections sit inside the cabinet.
On impeller models, the lid typically locks before the spin. Whirlpool's general guidance for HE top-loaders is that the lid must be closed for the washer to drain and spin, and that lint, detergent buildup or other obstructions near the lock can stop it. Clear the area and unplug the washer for a few minutes to reset it. On agitator models, many use a lid switch instead of a lock. For more on the two designs, see front-load vs top-load washer problems.
Check the drain hose and standpipe
Pull the washer out gently so you don't crush the hose. Frigidaire's top-load drain guidance starts by asking whether the washer was moved or the hose bumped, then has you straighten any kinks. Electrolux lists a hose taped into the standpipe as a cause of slow draining, and GE warns against pushing the hose too far into the standpipe, which can siphon water.
Whirlpool's installation instructions limit the hose to no more than 8 inches inside a standpipe at least 2 inches across. Standpipe height limits differ between manufacturers, so check the installation instructions for your Kenmore model. If the standpipe overflows when the washer pumps out, the clog is in the house drain.
Likely failed parts and what a technician tests
Once the load, hose and filter are ruled out, a technician usually tests:
- Drain pump: a hum with no water moving often means a jam; silence can mean a failed pump or no power reaching it.
- Lid switch, lid lock or door lock: whether the control sees the lid or door as closed and locked.
- Drive belt, drive system or motor: whether the motor runs and actually turns the basket.
- Internal hoses: the hose between tub and pump can clog with socks and small items.
- Water level sensing and control board: if the washer never starts a drain.
Give the technician your full model number when you book. It tells them which manufacturer's parts your Kenmore uses before they arrive.
When to stop DIY
Call a pro if water won't drain after you clear the hose and filter, if the pump hums without draining, if you smell burning, if water is leaking onto the floor, or if your top-loader's pump is buried in the cabinet. Brand-neutral detail is in our guides to a washer not draining and a washer not spinning.
What a Kenmore drain or spin repair costs
Fixr lists a typical service call fee of $50 to $100. Fixr's typical repair prices include a drain hose at $95 to $170, a lid switch at $85 to $160, a door lock at $110 to $200, a drive belt at $120 to $175 and a drain pump at $300 to $400. On an older washer, compare the quote with the price of a new one; Fixr suggests replacing when a repair runs past half that price.
